MP Tom Brake recently spent the afternoon watching a fantastic local summer tennis tournament at the Wallington Tennis Club. The tournament, which has been held every year since 2010, was hotly contested as men and women of all ages battled it out to be this year’s champions.
Geoff and Bea reinvigorated the club in 1999 after it fell into disrepair and have slowly developed the club to include coaching, tournaments and a steadily increasing membership. The tennis club is centred around giving every person, no matter their age, the opportunity to play and enjoy tennis. A simple rulebook, along with a small annual fee, means that everyone is welcome.
Tom, a club member, said: ‘Building up grassroots clubs across the UK is the perfect way to get people exercising and enjoying tennis again. With Andy Murray succeeding at the very top of the sport, we must build on the excitement around tennis and encourage people to pick up their racket!’
