Tom Brake MP, last week, was delighted to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sutton Education Business Partnership, in recognition of his continued support in providing work experience for local school students.
Work experience at Tom’s office provides an insight into the world of politics and the daily tasks of both his parliamentary and constituency offices.
Students are able to see how Tom replies to the vast number of constituents who contact him daily on a range of issues. As well as this, students learn about Tom’s social media work and the important local campaigns that are currently being run in the constituency.
For many, the highlight of the placement is the opportunity to work in Tom’s Westminster office, which allows students to see, at first hand, the country’s legislature at work.
Students from a number of local schools have taken part in the programme, including: Wallington High School for Girls, Greenshaw High School, Stanley Park High School and many others within the Carshalton and Wallington area. Previous work experience students have gone on to work in politics themselves, which highlights the real benefit of undertaking such an opportunity.
Louis Caplin, one of Tom’s summer work experience interns, said:
“Working in Tom Brake’s office has given me a real insight into the world of politics. I really felt that I was contributing usefully to all the good things he and his staff do in the constituency! The week was a great experience and has given me a lot more confidence in myself.”
Tom Brake said:
"It is always great to have the opportunity to encourage more young people to get involved in community campaigning. Even if a career in politics isn't what a young person wants to do later in life, they learn vital transferable skills that can prove important for a number of future roles. The whole office is proud to be recognised in this way."
