Sutton Liberal Democrats with Tom Brake MP and Paul Burstow MP
Tom Brake MP, Paul Burstow MP, Cllr Sean Brennan, Leader of Sutton Council and Greater London Assembly Member Lynn Featherstone were just some of the Lib Dems present at the Sutton Borough Liberal Democrats' AGM on Monday evening at the Civic Offices.
Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic Lib Dem members Tom Brake said, "The Liberal Democrats have popular policies such as scrapping student top-up fees, free care for the elderly and getting rid of the Council Tax. And we have the will to win. We will relish the opportunity in the next few months to challenge the Government on their record and to defend ours!"
Paul Burstow MP, in his comments said, "We are already offering a more effective opposition to this discredited Labour government than the Conservatives, with all the polls pointing to Liberal Democrat gains at the General Election. I am looking forward to the campaign."
Cllr Sean Brennan added, "Here in Sutton, with our excellent schools, relatively low levels of crime, high recycling rates and award-winning libraries, we have shown what can be achieved by Liberal Democrats locally. We are now seeking the same opportunities nationally."
In recent weeks, two national opinion polls have confirmed that the Liberal Democrats are perceived as being the most effective opposition to the Government. In an 'Independent on Sunday' poll, 44% agreed with the statement that 'Charles Kennedy and the Liberal Democrats are a more effective opposition than Mr Howard and the Tories'. 41% disagreed.
