Sutton Citizenship Ceremony

November 28, 2005 12:00 AM

On Sunday 27 November at 11am, Tom Brake MP had the pleasure of participating in the British Citizenship Ceremony for new British Citizens. The ceremony was held in the Registry Office in Worcester Road, Sutton. The new citizens included people from Russia, China, Sri Lanka, Turkey, New Zealand, Iran and other states.

Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, all applicants aged 18 years or over who are accepted for naturalisation as a British Citizen are required to attend a Citizenship Ceremony. During this ceremony they take the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen and make a Pledge of Loyalty to the United Kingdom.

Tom Brake MP, said:

"It is often forgotten what an important right of passage becoming a British Citizen is to many of the people who reach this point. The Citizenship Ceremony recognises the significance of this event in people's lives.

We should not underestimate the valuable contribution that new citizen's make to this country. One of the people I met at the ceremony was endeavouring to take equivalence training so they could practice as a medical consultant in the UK."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
