Council Tax - Is It Fair Petition?

May 17, 2006 4:08 PM

In Parliament on Tuesday (16th May 2006) Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, presented the isitfair petition, which calls for the abolition of the unfair and unpopular Council Tax.

Signatures for the 175 signature petition were collected by local resident Clare Nunns and Tom Brake MP.

Clare Nunns said, "The petition is to call attention to the unfair way that Council Taxes are levied, on houses rather than on people. Old people's income is greatly reduced in most cases and Council Tax continues to rise. The tax bites hardest on those of us who are just above the level of right to claim any benefit."

Tom Brake added, "The Council Tax is the most unfair tax around. It is time it was replaced with a tax that takes into account how much people earn. This would be the fairest way to pay for local services."

Isitfair is a national campaign which calls for the Council Tax to be scrapped and replaced with a tax based on people's ability to pay. Details of the isitfair campaign can be found on the website; www.isitfair.co.uk

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
