On Tuesday Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, went with a local Carshalton student to deliver a letter to Tony Blair regarding the lack of teachers in developing countries.

Alex King, who is in year 8 at Stanley Park High School's Department of Autism, was accompanied by teacher Katrina Simpson and assistant Catherine Baker to deliver a box of letters on behalf of his class; including paper cut-outs of teachers decorated with the names of subjects they learn at school, such as history and science, which he said all children should have the opportunity to study.

On a visit to Stanley Park High School, Mr. Brake was approached by Alex who wanted help drawing attention to the 100 million children who are unable to go to school in developing countries.

When asked what moved him to write to the Prime Minister, Alex, who hopes to be a Minister for the Education of Autistic Children should such a position be created, said, "Third World children deserve what we deserve"

Commenting on his day with Alex, Mr. Brake said, "I commend him for his initiative. It's not every day that a pupil takes his concerns to the top, and I am delighted I was able to assist Alex draw further attention to the lack of teachers in developing countries. This is a worthwhile cause for the education of all children."
