Tom Brake Speaks Out Against Changes to Maternity Policy

November 1, 2006 6:16 PM

Tom Talks to Mother and NewbornTom Brake today roundly criticized proposed changes to current Epsom and St Helier maternity ward policies. A leaked letter to Ruth Carnall, Chief Executive of London Strategic Health Authority, revealed that proposed changes to policy for mothers going into labour before their 34th week had apparently been made with no attempt at consulting the public or consultation with lead neonatology and consultant paediatricians.

Tom Brake commented, 'It is claimed by clinicians that the decision to move mothers who have gone into early labour will pose a significant risk, and serves no medical purpose. We must know why clinicians were not consulted, and whether the changes will indeed pose a significant risk to mothers. If they do, the Trust will need to go straight into discussions with clinicians to find a way forward that does not pose a risk to patients.

Tom Brake will be speaking on Channel Four news tonight on these, and other issues surrounding St Helier Hospital and the NHS.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
