Asda's Will Only Sell Cigarettes to Adults

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, dropped in on Asda's local store in Beddington Lane on Friday to be briefed by store manager, Joe Lock, about Asda's eighteen only policy on cigarette sales.

Asda were the first supermarket chain to introduce a ban on the sale of cigarettes to 16 and 17 year olds as far back as September 2006. A national ban on the sale of cigarettes to under 18s will be introduced by the Government in October.

At the same time, Asda also prohibited the sale of knives.

Tom Brake said, "I commend Asda's for taking unilateral action in introducing a smoking ban. An alarming number of teenagers take up smoking. This has enormous consequences later in life for their health. Making it harder to buy cigarettes will act a as deterrent and should cut both the number of smokers and the number of cigarettes they consume."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
