Brake Urges Local Residents to Back Bid

March 7, 2007 2:11 PM

Sutton council is bidding for £1.5million from the £80 million Big Lottery fund to rebuild Middleton Circle Library. Tom Brake MP, for Carshalton and Wallington is urging local residents to back this bid.

This opportunity would allow the Sutton Library Service to replace the building built in the 1960s with a new two storey building with an IT Centre, Local Studies Centre and a Citizens Advice area. It would also include a sensory garden and Local Discoveries Centre. The latter of which would display the recent history of the local area.

On Friday the 16th of March and Saturday the 17th of March, between 10am and 3pm, residents can express their views on the plans at Middleton Circle Library.

For those unable to attend, Tom Brake is urging residents to submit ideas and expressions of support to: Angela Fletcher, Head of Libraries and Heritage, Sutton Central Library, St Nicholas Way, Sutton, SM1 1EA, or angela.fletcher@sutton.gov.uk. She can also be reached on 020 8770 4755. Or they can sign a petition on Tom Brake's website www.tombrake.co.uk backing the plans.

The bid to the Big Lottery must be submitted by the end of this month and the letters of support must be received by the 23rd of March,2007. The outcome will be announced in October 2007.

Tom Brake said, "Middleton Circle library is a great library. But if this bid is success it will be even greater. To win, the Council must show there is community support for the project. So I urge people to get writing, emailing or ringing!"

If the bid is successful the Sutton Library Service expects to start rebuilding by October 2008.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
