World-wide Fence Timber Shortage Hits Sutton

May 30, 2007 12:00 AM

Demand in China and Dubai for fencing timbers has hit Sutton according to Sutton Housing Partnership.

In a letter to Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington, who had taken up an issue for a constituent who wanted a fence mended, Sutton Housing Partnership said, "Unfortunately, our efforts to clear the backlog (caused by financial constraints in the last financial year and high winds) have been hampered by a worldwide shortage of fencing timber".

Research has confirmed that there is an unprecedented demand for timber, which has been compounded by the high winds and storms during the winter, resulting in more than usual property damage. Furthermore economies such as China and Dubai have been experiencing construction booms which led to timber suppliers exporting more timber and prices rising due to the willingness of outside markets to pay the higher prices. The Fencing Contractors Association confirms that European timber producers have indeed been exporting more to China and Dubai.

Tom Brake MP said, "If there was any doubt about how closely linked our economy is to other economies, this will dispel it. Whilst demand for fencing remains high, perhaps alternatives to traditional wooden fencing, such as recycled plastic, may provide an alternative."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
