Honoring the Covenant

October 11, 2007 4:36 PM

Tom Brake MP is giving his backing to the efforts of the Royal British Legion in their campaign to restore the broken covenant with the government to provide the best possible support for the armed services. The Royal British Legion is the organization in the United Kingdom that advocates in the interest of the armed forces, past and present. The Legion believes that the government has failed to stay true to this covenant recently.

Specifically, the Legion believes that the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, which is a compensation package for members of the armed forces, lacks the additional support that was previously available to soldiers when the covenant was being followed such as additional health care services.

The main beliefs of the Legion are that members of the armed forces deserve a worthy compensation scheme that honours the commitment and sacrifice made by soldiers, greater mental and physical health care services for past and present soldiers and finally more support for bereaved families.

In regards to this issue, Ming Campbell said 'The Military Covenant is fractured. This government is failing to play fair by the brave men and women of our armed forces. The level of accommodation in some areas is appalling and there is inadequate treatment for those experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. Many veterans are finding themselves desperately ill, out of work and homeless.'

The office of Bob Russell MP, who is the Shadow Secretary for Defence, supports the actions of the Royal British Legion.

Commenting, Tom Brake said "the Royal British Legion play a substantial role in representing the needs of members and former members of the Armed forces. The government needs to show the same level of concern."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
