Latin and Ancient Culture Not Just for Elite - Brake

July 28, 2008 3:23 PM

Last week London MP Tom Brake (Carshalton and Wallington) tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament in support of the 'Latin in the Park' initiative.

'Latin in the Park', launched by the Iris Project offers an opportunity for people across London to learn some Latin and ancient culture in a friendly and relaxed environment, free of charge.

The Director of the Iris Project Dr Lorna Robinson said: "Latin in the Park has attracted a wide variety of people from all walks of life and backgrounds to have a go at picking up an ancient language which is often thought of as only for a privileged few. The sessions have been really popular and successful, and are running across inner London during the summer months."

Commenting Mr Brake who studied basic Latin at school said: "I am very pleased to see that this area of study, previously viewed as elitist and difficult to access is now open to a wider audience. The initiative has my full support."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
