MP Backs Adventurers' Ambulance Journey

December 17, 2008 4:45 PM

Local MP, Tom Brake, has pledged his support to a charity journey that will see Wallington resident Gary Chance co-drive with his friend Nic Leon an ambulance to Gambia.

The ambulance will set off from Hyde Park Corner on Boxing Day in a 6,000-mile trip to raise funds for schoolchildren in Gambia and here in the UK, as well as Luton and Dunstable Hospital Trust. The ambulance itself will be loaded with medical equipment and will be donated to the people of Gambia.

Local MP Tom Brake met with Gary at Gary's home in Wallington. Gary explained the coming perils of their journey in an ambulance donated by the charity Pro Medicus. When they have completed the London to Northern Africa leg, beyond Morocco, they will run the risks of the Sahara desert, including fields of landmines and the possibility of bandit attacks.

Tom Brake made clear how impressed and proud he was that local man Gary was involved in what Tom called a "real modern day adventure".

He said: "I wish these intrepid voyagers the best of luck in their travels. This is a seriously good cause."

Gary said, "We know there will be lots of challenges along the way, but we are safe in the knowledge that this trip will benefit one of the poorest areas in Africa."

The voyage is still looking for donations of medical supplies, even those that may have passed their use by date. If you wish to donate, visit www.lionsofchance.co.uk, where the trips progress can also be followed.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
