Local MP Tom Brake hosts a Facebook meeting in the local pub.

March 20, 2009 10:37 AM

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, held his first meeting organised via Facebook in the Rose and Crown Pub in Wallington on Monday night.

The event was planned through the social networking site and gave people the chance to talk to him in a less formal setting that would normally be the case.

Tom was also joined by Julia Goldsworthy, Liberal Democrat MP for Falmouth and Camborne in Cornwall, who is currently the youngest Member of Parliament in England and was also a participant on Channel 4's The Games back in 2006. For those of you who didn't get the chance to watch it , it was a reality program where contestants competed against each other in Olympic styled events such as running, cycling and swimming. Julia managed to raise £30,000 for her local Air Ambulance service by taking part in the show.

On the night both Tom and Julia talked about there experiences of life as an MP as well as taking questions from people of varied ages in the audience. They then proceeded to talk to people personally about any issues or queries they have about politics or just to let them find out more about the person that represents them in Parliament.

Commenting Tom Brake said, 'I really enjoyed the night, it was a great chance to see many people who live in Carshalton and Wallington that I may not normally get the chance to meet, and I would like to thank everyone who managed to make it'

'I was really glad that Julia took the time to come down, it gave everyone the chance to talk to another MP on a personal level.'

After the success of Tom's first 'Facebook' meeting he is planning to hold more in the future if anyone missed this one.

Tom is also holding an online advice surgery between 6pm-7pm on Friday March 27th on Facebook.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
