A BusinessWatch in Carshalton could make a real difference to local businesses

Local MP Tom Brake joined Sergeant Martin Nicholson, of the Carshalton Central Safer Neighbourhood Team, on patrol last Thursday.

Tom and Sergeant Nicholson called on Chris and Jack, the barbers in Beacon Grove, to discuss the possible roll-out of the crime prevention scheme Business Watch. Tom and Sergeant Nicholson also discussed the possibility of introducing Pubwatch in local pubs.

Business Watch and Pubwatch provide better communications between licensees, shopkeepers and police. They help to provide a forum for the discussion and solution of problems relating to violence on licensed premises and against local shops.

Pubwatch can be organised by the licensees themselves or the local police. It means pubs can give each other mutual support, as well as a form of protection.

Tom Brake MP, who is the Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, commented after the patrol:

"Sergeant Martin Nicholson and his team are doing a great good job for businesses and residents, by helping to prevent crime and improve security. Setting up good support networks for businesses and pubs in Carshalton Village will help improve security even further at a time when the downturn in the economy risks pushing crime figures upwards."

Last week, Tom Brake met with the Federation of Small Businesses to discuss ways to improve the Government's current strategy towards business crime.
