Carshalton resident to be released by the American Forces in Iraq

April 8, 2009 5:18 PM

Tom Brake MP has learnt from the wife of a Carshalton man detained by American Forces in Baghdad, that he will be released in the next 12 days. Mr Brake understands that an Iraqi judge has cleared Mr Al-Sarraj from all the charges and the American forces have received the order to release him.

Tom has been working closely with Mr Al-Sarraj's wife, Ms Shereen Nasser,. Tom wrote to David Miliband, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and contacted the American Forces. Tom also wrote the Iraqi ambassador in London. Last month, Tom Brake MP secured a meeting with Bill Rammell MP, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and Ms Shereen Nasser, to discuss the case of Ms Nasser's husband, Mr Al-Sarraj.

Since the 15th September 2008, Mr Al-Sarraj has been detained in Camp Cropper, a detention facility run by the Americans for the Iraqis in Baghdad. He was alleged to have made a timing device for a bomb which was in fact an electronic component to measure cardiac output.

Mr Al-Sarraj's wife, Ms Shereen Nasser who lives in Carshalton said:

"I am obviously very happy about today's decision to drop the charges against my husband. But I do hope that the courts decision is honoured and Kadhum is released very quickly and that he can come home very soon.

"I would also like to thank all those who supported my through this difficult time".

Tom Brake MP commented:

"We should wait until he is safely back on UK soil before celebrating, but the Iraqi judge throwing out the case is a huge step in the right direction.

"We need to keep up the pressure to ensure he is now promptly released and allowed to return to the UK."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
