Tesco reverses young people ban

April 28, 2009 2:42 PM

The Tesco Express store in Wallington has reversed its ban on all unaccompanied children. Earlier this year, following a series of violent incidents and thefts over a short period of time, the store manager decided to ban all unaccompanied children. However, a number of local residents complained that the ban punished all young people for the crimes of a small minority.

Local MP Tom Brake took the case up and contacted Tesco to complain that the ban was disproportionate and discriminatory against young people.

Apologising for the inconvenience caused, Emma Reynolds, Tesco's Government Affairs Manager, has written to Tom Brake to announce that, 'this ban will be lifted and that unaccompanied children will be allowed again in the store'. However, only two children will be allowed into the store at anyone time.

Commenting on the decision, Tom Brake said: "I am very pleased to see that the Wallington Tesco Express has decided to reverse this unfair measure."

'Whilst criminal behavior needs to be addressed, I was extremely concerned by the restrictive and discriminatory nature of this ban.

'I do hope that the shop will continue to work closely with the police and local schools to solve violent incidents and thefts.'

The Store Manager, Bavan Yadharr has announced that he intends to improve links with the local community and has already arranged meetings with local police officers and headteachers.
