Local MP Tom Brake has been testing the new generation of electricity meters in his constituency office. Smart meters allow users to monitor and then reduce their energy consumption.

Last week, the Government announced that every home in Britain will be equipped with smart meters by the end of 2020.

Tom commented:

"I am very pleased with this smart meter. It allows me to keep a close eye on the energy consumption in my office. As a result of installing the meter, we have taken immediate action and switched off the office fridge! It was only used for milk, which we were buying every day. Switching if off has saved around £150 and has slashed our emissions.

"The meter helps to curb unnecessary electricity use and reduce my carbon emissions and energy bills.

"I welcome proposals to introduce smart meters in all homes. The smart meter is a great 2 in 1 device: you will save money and go green!

At the moment, smart meters are only provided to a small number of households as part of a Government trail. A final decision on the roll-out of the scheme is expected soon. For more information, contact your energy provider.
