With the news that Britain will be hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2015, as well as the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012, the Cricket World Cup in 2019 and quite possibly the Football World Cup in 2018, local MP Tom Brake is inviting residents to get into training for what is set to be a 'Decade of Sporting achievement' for people in the area.

Tom Brake said "This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. There's a lot of sporting talent in Carshalton & Wallington, from ping pong to pole-vaulting. I encourage everyone to get out there and take advantage of the sporting opportunities already opening up in Carshalton & Wallington.

"Our area boasts Olympic and Paralympic medals and impressive sporting achievements to its names, such as those of Olympic star Rebecca Romero and Paralympic star David Weir. The coming years are a chance to add to those strengths and make Sutton truly the sporting home of London."

Jonathan Edwards, world record-holder in the triple jump and winner of two Olympic medals, offered Tom Brake his support: "It's great to see such a level of interest and enthusiasm. I am delighted that Tom will be working closely with me to ensure that people across Carshalton & Wallington get engaged in the Games and the other fantastic opportunities offered by the coming decade."
