Local Hockey Star Needs Sponsorship to Shine

Local MP Tom Brake has lent his support to a local athlete in need of sponsorship to achieve her sporting ambitions.

Louise and Tom team up!

Louise is seeking funding to help her compete in the Commonwealth Games

Local resident Louise Pugh-Bevan has been selected to represent Wales with the Women's hockey team at the 11th Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October this year. However, Louise is not a professional and plays only for her love of the game. In order to fulfil her aim, she is urgently looking for sponsorship from local businesses and individuals.

Louise plays for Slough Ladies Hockey Club, the current national champions and has previously competed in European competition. She retired from international competition four years ago but returned after being asked to participate in World Cup qualifiers earlier this year.

Louise regards her call-up to the Commonwealth Games squad as a massive opportunity to achieve something special and is delighted to have the chance to compete. She said:

'The last time the Welsh women's hockey team qualified to play in the Commonwealth Games was all the way back in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. I never thought I'd get the opportunity to play in such a prestigious competition- it's an honour to have been selected.'

'Unfortunately I'm not sure how I'm going to fund the trip. I would much rather be spending my summer months training without the worry and stress of whether I can afford to go to Delhi.'

Louise is desperately trying to raise the £5,000 needed to get her to the Games. This will help cover the various additional costs involved with being a top athlete including training, kit, physio, medical bills, travel and accommodation.

Louise contacted Tom Brake, who is offering her his full support:

'It is a credit to the local area that Louise has been selected to play sport at the very highest level. Unfortunately, the costs involved for any athlete at the pinnacle of their sport is that much higher.'

'I am therefore urging any local businesses or people who might be able to help Louise fulfil her sporting dream to get in touch with her or make a donation. Any offer, no matter how large or small, could really make a difference.'

You can donate by making a cheque payable to Louise Pugh-Bevan and sending it to Kennedy House, 5 Nightingale Road, Carshalton, SM5 2DN marked for the attention of Louise. Alternatively, to find out more about sponsorship you can contact Louise directly on 0781 530 6221.
