Prior to competing in the Grim Challenge - a 30 km duathlon of cycling and running on the October 23rd at Aldershot - Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington met with the Royal British Legion last Saturday to discuss their recent charitable efforts and goals.

Tom will be competing in the Grim Challenge on behalf of the Royal British Legion and all money he raises from sponsors will be donated to the Legion.

The Legion is running its annual Poppy Appeal with this year's focus being the Afghanistan generation of Armed Forces family. Donations to the Poppy Appeal help built recovery facilities, fund legal assistance for Armed Forces families, and compensation for seriously injured soldiers.

"With help from generous supporters, I have raised thousands of pounds in the past. This year I not only want to improve my race time, but also raise as much money as possible for the Legion" says Tom.

This year, the Legion is focusing on building Personnel Recovery Centres which provide residential accommodation for service members undergoing recovery treatments. The centres will have tailored programs to aid the recovery of individuals and ensure a smooth transition to duty or civilian life.

Tom continues, "Hearing from the Legion is what motivates me. Knowing that competing in the Grim is going to help the men and women who defend our country makes me want to run and cycle even harder"
