Local MP Tom Brake has teamed up with TV presenter Angela Rippon to support this year's Carers Week (13th-19th June) and to recognise the contribution made by people not only in Carshalton and Wallington but all across the country who provide unpaid care for people who are ill, frail or disabled.

The theme for this year's Carers Week is 'The True Face of Carers', and will call for greater recognition for the diverse range of people who have caring responsibilities. The work they carry out is vital for families, friends and their community.

Tom met up with Angela at the House of Commons to pay tribute to the work of carers, and to urge that they receive more support in their roles.

Tom said: "Thousands of people in Carshalton and Wallington sacrifice not only their time but also their money and their health in order to care for a loved one. Together they save this country an astonishing £119billion. Their invaluable contribution deserves to be recognised and celebrated.

"I am taking part in Carers Week to show my respect and appreciation for their work. We need to let them know that services are out there to help them. Caring can be so incredibly demanding and it's important that carers know that they don't have to struggle on alone."

Angela, who has personal experience of being a carer, added: "It's a strain that people accept willingly and lovingly, and if they're prepared to do that I think that as a civilised nation we should be prepared to do something in return."
