Last week Tom Brake held a productive meeting with Flavio Marega, the Brazilian Minister Counsellor in London, to discuss the case of Neil Juwaheer who died in Brazilian police custody in July 2007.

The MP for Carshalton and Wallington said: "Last week's meeting at the Embassy was a very positive one. I am optimistic that constructive progress can now be made in the investigation into Neil's death.

"Mr Marega has promised to chase up the case in Brazil. It is a great relief that the Brazilian authorities are now willing to work with the Juwaheer family and are agreeing to further the investigation."

Neil Juwaheer died while in Brazilian police custody in the north-eastern city of Fortaleza in July 2007. The Brazilian police claimed that the Carshalton Beeches resident had died of a drugs overdose, but an independent coroner's report found the cause of death to be severe head trauma.
