Tom Brake speaks out for former Olympian

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has nominated Robert Wells, a former Olympic medallist from Carshalton, to be a torchbearer at next year's Olympic Torch Relay.

Tom said: "After the disappointment of not getting tickets for the Games, I hope that Robert will be picked to carry the Torch. It would be a just and well-deserved recognition for his contribution to British sport."

The nomination can be viewed online at the Lloyds TSB Olympic Torch Relay website until 12th September, after which a shortlist of nominations will be drawn up and entered into a draw to determine who will carry the Olympic torch when it passes through London next July.

Mr Wells, who won the bronze medal for Super Heavyweight boxing at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, failed to secure tickets for the boxing events at next year's London Games. Initially, his application to volunteer at the Games also failed, but following a campaign led by Tom and the local press, Mr Wells' application is now under consideration.

Tom added: "I am very pleased to see that the London 2012 Organising Committee are now progressing with his application. Robert is someone who should undoubtedly play a part in the Games when they come to London."
