Welcome Drop in Unemployment

June 21, 2012 4:10 PM

The unemployment rate in Carshalton and Wallington has decreased yet again to its lowest level since last autumn, according to figures released by the Office of National Statistics. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.2% locally, with Sutton seemingly weathering the economic storm better than London and other parts of the country with a national average of 5.4%.

Responding to the figures, Tom Brake MP said, 'the drop in unemployment is encouraging but we need to get businesses growing so that we can get more people back into work. We need to ensure we are doing everything we possibly can to help businesses prosper in Sutton and that is why I am really keen for local businesses to get in touch with me if they have issues or concerns they would like me to raise in Parliament'.

Regarding benefits, while the percentage of population on government benefits has risen in the past months to 5.0%, this rate is still lower than the national proportion of 6.5%.

One piece of less optimistic news was present in the jobs report: the number of businesses in the region. Across the country the number of businesses fell by about one percent in the past year, but while London has increased its number of businesses by nearly one percent, Carshalton and Wallington suffered a five-business contraction over the same period.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
