Stay Protected This Summer

Those looking forward to enjoying some sun after the Olympics are reminded not to forget their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Local MP Tom Brake said, "Many people don't realise that travelling without their EHIC potentially invalidates their travel insurance, leading to unnecessary costs".

"The cards are free but you need to ensure you avoid applying through companies that will charge you an application fee."

EHICs are free to all citizens of participating counties and replace the old E111 form to provide state-funded (sometimes free) healthcare for travellers in the European Economic Area and Switzerland. Visitors can receive emergency treatment due to accident or illness with a valid EHIC.

There is also an app for smartphones that includes general information about the card, emergency phone numbers, treatments that are covered and costs, how to claim reimbursement and who to contact in case you have lost your card.
