Help for local farmers

Farmers will now have someone to stand up for them in their fight against the big supermarkets, with the appointment of a new independent Groceries Code Adjudicator.

Welcoming the news, Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said:

"Farmers have been fighting an uneven fight with the big supermarkets. Many have been struggling, and some have been forced out of business by unfair prices."

"Local food suppliers are a vital part of local economy and community, and they deserve a fair deal. That's why I am very pleased they will now have someone fighting their corner."

The adjudicator will regulate interactions between the ten largest supermarkets and farmers and suppliers.

This will ensure a fairer deal for farmers and suppliers who can complain to the Adjudicator if they are unfairly treated by supermarkets. If a breach of the code is found, the Adjudicator will be able to make recommendations against a supermarket or impose fines.
