Local MP Tom Brake joined Sutton's Looked after Children and Young People for a ceremony celebrating their achievements.

The event highlighted the successes of the children, young adults, and care leavers looked after in Sutton. Guests celebrated such successes as the acquisition of GCSEs, successful work placements and a range of other personal accomplishments.

Tom said:

"I would like to congratulate all the children and young people for their determination, achievements and progress made. It was a pleasure to help recognise all their hard work."

"I would also like to thank everyone who dedicates their time and effort to supporting these children in Sutton, whose everyday lives are often challenging."

"It is uplifting to see how well these young individuals do, despite the various difficulties they have to confront. Their ambition and hard work is inspirational."

The awards were presented by Mayor Sean Brennan, who also gave a short speech opening the event. In the course of the evening, the winners of the photography competition were announced. The first prize in the 5 - 11 age group category went to Joseph McPherson. The winner in the 12+ age group was Lewis Tucker.

Tom said:

"I would like to congratulate Lewis and Joseph for winning the competition. I have seen their winning work and it was really impressive. The competition seemed tough, as all the photographs were remarkable. They should be really proud of themselves."

The event held was the first of two. The second took place on Tuesday 26th February 2012.
