Campaigner for St Helier Hospital Tom Brake MP has welcomed a report showing St Helier and Epsom offers the best quality of care in the whole of south west London and north Surrey.

Prepared by an independent health consultancy, MHP Health Mandate, the report assessed 146 NHS trusts in England. It allows patients to see how their local hospital compares with the rest of the hospitals in their area as well as nationally. It has shown that Epsom and St Helier hospitals are providing the highest quality care in the region.

Tom Brake said:

"This is welcome news and a good performance from the Trust's staff who work so hard on behalf of patients. It also demonstrates once again the madness of BSBV's plans to close our A&E and maternity. What is the logic in downgrading one of the best hospitals in the region?"

"The report has shown what people in Carshalton and Wallington have been long campaigning for - St Helier hospital is an asset in our community we cannot afford to lose."

"This is simply more evidence that the BSBV report must be binned."

The report rated hospital trusts based on their overall performance. The most important factors were patient experience, operation waiting times, and infection rates. Epsom and St Helier hospitals scored 91st out of 146 hospitals. Although 91st place leaves room for improvement, the hospitals scored particularly well in several important categories. Epsom and St Helier were in the top quarter for protecting patients against the risk of being harmed and ensuring they do not wait long for operations. The trust performed well on the number of operations cancelled at short notice, with patients being less at risk of having their surgery postponed than in other hospitals.
