MP supports the Big Energy Switch

April 2, 2013 5:58 PM

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has urged local residents to sign up for a scheme that could save them money on energy bills.

The 'Big London Energy Switch' is offering residents across London the possibility of paying less for gas and electricity by switching suppliers. If successful, the scheme could see thousands of households across the capital simultaneously change their energy provider, in return for a lower fixed term tariff.

Tom said:

"If you feel that you are not getting the best deal on your energy prices, but have no time to compare all the providers, there is help at hand."

"I am happy to support the Big London Energy Switch campaign and have signed up myself. It is very simple, but you will need your gas and electricity bills to hand."

"I hope that many Carshalton and Wallington residents will be able to benefit from this initiative. But they must hurry, the closing date is midnight on the 8th April."

The 'Big London Energy Switch' is a collective switching scheme. By encouraging as many consumers as possible to switch their energy supplier at once, the scheme aims to get a lower fixed term tariff for the participating households. Boroughs will help select an energy switching provider which will hold a reverse auction. There is no commitment to switch - by signing up people only register their interest. Residents will have the option of buying energy from the supplier that wins the auction. Households who took part in similar schemes elsewhere saved between £60 and £200.

The scheme has received funding as part of the government's 'Cheaper Energy Together'. Under the initiative, the boroughs were each given a share of £686,655 by the Department for Energy and Climate Change. Sutton borough will use the funding to work with residents who struggle to keep warm and could benefit most from switching their energy tariff.

The aim is to sign up as many Londoners as possible for the Big London Energy Switch. The more people that sign-up, the better deal we'll likely get. Be quick - the deadline is midnight on 8 April.

Tom added:

"This simple idea could help empower energy consumers across Sutton. Although there are no guarantees, there is nothing to lose. Participants are under no obligation to switch."

"The more people sign up, the more power councils will have in negotiating price deals. I would encourage everyone to register and see if they could save some of their hard-earned cash."
