Local school takes charge

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has welcomed the news that a local school is to receive a £7500 grant to install an electric vehicle (EV) charging point.

An eco-friendly Wandle Valley School in Welbeck Road, Carshalton is set to benefit from new funding announced by the Government. Tom visited the school last Friday to congratulate them on securing the grant and discuss their plans to use the charge point as a community resource.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Brake said: "The extra investment in charging points will not only provide a boost to the car industry, but also help protect our environment from damaging emissions."

"It's great to see Wandle Val Tom Brake with Wandle Valley School Headteacher, Mr. Douglas L Boneley School setting an example and helping get Carshalton and Wallington ready for a key industry of the future."

"I hope that these charging points are the first of many more to be installed in our area."

The Government has recently made an extra £37m available to help offset the costs of installing the charging points. Local authorities, train operators and NHS Trusts are among the groups set to benefit from the funding announcement by Liberal Democrat Transport Minister Norman Baker.

Wandle Valley School is the only school to successfully bid for the funding. By allowing the staff, visitors and members of the public to use the facilities, the school hopes the charging point becomes a community asset. Special 'green' EV bays will be sited in the most prominent position within the school grounds, helping educate and raise awareness among the pupils, staff and visitors about the importance of reducing protecting the environment.

As part of the visit, Tom Brake had also had a chance to try a new Nissan Leaf, courtesy of Ancaster Group in Croydon. The Leaf is a 100% electric car, built in Sunderland in the North East. In only 45 minutes, the Leaf's battery can be charged to 80 per cent of its capacity, enough to cover over 100 miles.
