MP pays tribute to Gary Mason

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake joined local residents for a memorial celebration in tribute of the former British Heavyweight Boxing Champion, and a Roundshaw resident, Gary Mason.

The event, held on Sunday 25 August, included the installation and unveiling of a special mural in the Phoenix Centre on Mollison Drive, Roundshaw Estate, and the installation of a bench with a plaque inscription.

Tom said: "Gary Mason was a remarkable man - a talented sportsman, a friend, and an inspiration to the local community. This was a very special event celebrating Gary's life and achievements."

"I am delighted that there is now a place in the Borough to hounour Gary's memory."

The mural in the Phoenix Centre commemorates people and events, showing the history of the area. Sutton Council have commissioned and paid for the extension to this mural in Gary's memory as he did many hand drumming workshops in Phoenix Centre and nearby St Paul's Church as part of the Rhythmical Empowerment Group.

The event on Sunday was attended by many local residents, friends, and family of Gary, as well as the Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton. The Gary Mason Charity drummers were also present to show everyone what this astonishing British heavyweight star was working towards. The unveiling of the mural was followed by boxing, basketball, drumming, and dance demonstrations.
