Vital train link secured

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, has welcomed final confirmation that rail services from Sutton through central London have been secured until 2021.

As part of the new franchise for rail services locally, Network Rail had originally proposed to terminate trains on the 'Wimbledon Loop' at Blackfriars - forcing local commuters to change trains there if they wanted to travel further north.

Following a campaign led by local transport campaigners and Tom Brake earlier this year, train services from Sutton through central London will continue; a move that was confirmed last week in the Department for Transport's invitation to tender for the franchise.

Tom Brake said, 'this is great news for local commuters and great news for the area more generally. Good transport links mean better access to jobs and increased prosperity for Sutton".

'I want to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone who signed the petition and responded to the Government consultation. In the consultation there were 33 questions, but 79% of the responses were about protecting the 'Wimbledon loop' services - clearly, together we made a difference'.
