Residents have their say on Lobbying Bill

October 8, 2013 5:57 PM

On Friday 4th October at Strawberry Lodge in Carshalton, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, Tom Brake, met with local residents to listen to, and answer, their concerns with regards to the Transparency Bill.

During the meeting, attended by over 60 local residents, Tom reiterated the Liberal Democrats' commitment to civil liberties and explained that the purpose of the Bill was to remove big money from politics and increase the accountability and transparency of non-party organisations that seek to influence government or the outcome of elections.

A number of residents raised concerns about the impact the Bill may have on charities and other organisations. In response, Tom Brake outlined the amendments being introduced by the Government to address these concerns.

Tom said, "The meeting was a great opportunity to listen to the concerns of local residents, to explain the purpose of the Bill and to outline some of the changes being made by the Government".

"It should be the strength of someone's argument not their bank balance that determines who wins elections. That is what the government wants to ensure happens through this Bill."

Towards the end of the meeting Tom Brake warned that a failure to implement the changes could see individuals or rich corporations using their wealth to influence unduly the outcome of elections.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
