Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake joined thousands of volunteers and Tesco customers across the country for the biggest food collection in the UK.

Tom Brake visited local Tesco Express in Wallington to show his support for the third Neighbourhood Food Collection organised together with foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare.

Across the UK, Tesco customers were invited to help hungry families this Christmas by donating food in store between Friday 29 November and Sunday 1 December.

Wallington Tesco Express' customers were given a special shopping list when they entered the store and were asked to pick up an item of food such as cereal, tinned foods and tea and coffee before donating it at the end of their shop.

Tom Brake, MP said: "It was wonde Tom Brake with Vijay, store manager at Wallington Tesco Express, during the collectionrful to see so many local residents being very generous so close to Christmas."

"Helping people in need is a great cause at any time of the year, but it seems especially worthwhile in the run up to Christmas."

"I congratulate Tesco, Fareshare, and the Trussell Trust for organising this excellent initiative that will provide important supplies to food banks both locally and nationally."

Vijay, store manager at Wallington Tesco Express said: "In the run up to Christmas we wanted to do our bit to feed those in need. Our customers were incredibly generous and I would like to thank them all for their support."

The food will now be distributed to the local foodbank or FareShare depot before being given to people in times of need. Tesco will be topping up all total donations by a further 30%.
