Carshalton teenagers seek campaign advice

March 26, 2014 11:58 AM

Four pupils from Carshalton High School for Girls received some top tips about campaigning from their local MP Tom Brake after seeking advice on their campaign around failing child welfare services.

At just 15 years of age, Alriatu Bah, Taila Hawley, Michelle Oppong-Baah and Lavanya Subramaniam have kick started their own campaign called 'Failing Systems' to raise awareness of the number of children who have died due to poor child welfare services.

Alriatu said: "We want to educate people about the symptoms of child abuse, so they can prevent these cases."

Mr. Brake added: "This is a very serious topic and the girls are showing a great level of maturity and awareness in trying to tackle it."

"Dreadful cases such as those of 17-month-old Baby P and 4-year-old Daniel Pelka have brought to light how children are tragically failed by welfare services. We must do everything in our power to protect such vulnerability."

When asked about what inspired their choice of campaign. Alriatu said: "We had to choose something that we felt very strongly about, and after watching the documentary on Victoria Climbiè in a Health and Social Care lesson, it really hit us all and made us determined to campaign about the topic."

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
