MP Brake calls for increased diabetes vigilance

March 31, 2014 4:22 PM

On Wednesday 26th March he had a diabetes test and met with healthcare professionals at the special event in Westminster to find out more about the disease.

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, joined volunteers from the International Diabetes Federation and staff from Novo Nordisk and Roche, leaders in diabetes care, to raise awareness of the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the UK.

Around 3.2 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in the UK, but it is estimated that a further 850,000 people may be living with the condition without realising it. This means that around 1 in 16 people in the UK are living with the disease - or approximately 6,230 people in the average constituency. If diagnosed early, diabetes can be actively managed to help reduce the serious consequences of the disease.

Mr. Brake said: "It really did shock me to think that over 6000 people in Carshalton and Wallington may be living with the disease, many of whom are completely unaware. Complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness and amputation highlight the importance of detecting diabetes early and seizing control."

"Getting tested takes only a few minutes and could save you years of illness. If you are concerned about diabetes, talk to your GP or pharmacist about having a blood glucose test, as I did last week."

A few symptoms you can look out for:

  • passing urine more often than usual, especially at night

  • increased thirst

  • extreme tiredness

  • unexplained weight loss

  • genital itching or regular episodes of thrush

  • slow healing of cuts and wounds

  • blurred vision

These symptoms are mostly caused by other, less serious illnesses, but it is important you see your GP so they can investigate.

If you are a resident of the Carshalton and Wallington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
