“Heart disease is a ticking time bomb”

April 15, 2014 4:20 PM

MP for Carshalton and Wallington, Tom Brake warned about a possible crisis among local hospitals when coping with heart disease.

Heart disease is currently the most common cause of death in the UK, accounting for one in three of all deaths. Although the number of heart disease related deaths has fallen as a result of better prevention and treatment, the number is still higher here than in many other European countries.

Tom said: "Sutton currently has more emergency cases of heart disease than the national average. Luckily for us, we have outstanding hospitals that manage to keep the number of deaths related to heart disease well below average.

Mr. Brake pointed out that the prevalence of risk factors such as raised blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes in the local area continues to increase.

Tom added: "Hospitals cannot cope with this growing burden for much longer."

Keeping your heart healthy, whatever your age, is the most important thing you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease. Spotting the signs of heart disease early and managing the risk factors also help reduce emergency cases.
