Is there a rocket scientist in our midst? - Brake

Hoping to usher in the next generation of rocket scientists, Tom Brake MP is encouraging Carshalton and Wallington schools to compete in the UK’s largest youth model rocket competition, the UK Youth Rocketry Challenge (UKRoC), this April.

The national final champions win an all-expenses-paid trip to the Farnborough International Airshow in Paris this summer, to represent the UK in a fly-off against teams from the USA, Japan, and France.

UKRoC involves the design, build, and launch of a model rocket with the aim of ensuring the passenger - two raw eggs - remains intact throughout the launch and landing. The rocket must reach 800 feet with specific target flight duration of 41-43 seconds. The challenge is aimed at students aged from 11-18 from secondary schools, colleges, and youth groups.

Carshalton & Wallington MP Tom Brake said:

"The UK Youth Rocketry Challenge gives our students an amazing opportunity to apply what they have learnt in science, technology, engineering, and maths. I hope local schools will take part in the competition and I look forward to supporting them as they reach for the sky.

"This free competition is the perfect opportunity to get young people excited about aerospace, defence, security, and space industries."

Rules governing the competition are altered every year to ensure designs can’t be repeated. It is a perfect chance for young people to have an early insight into the world of engineering, especially given that 2018 is the ‘Year of Engineering.’

Registration for the 2018 UKRoC closes on 28th February 2018 and teams schools can find all the information to register at - www.ukayroc.org.uk

Notes

The Year of Engineering is a government campaign, which celebrates the world and wonder of engineering. ADS has signed up as a partner to the campaign and you can find out more about the campaign here.
