Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake is calling on London Mayor Boris Johnson to extend Sutton's 154 night bus service to 24 hours a day.
This call comes as the Mayor recently announced plans for a 24-hour Tube service at weekends from 2015. Tom Brake has welcomed the decision but emphasised "more needs to be done to maintain a safe and affordable nightlife."
The previous night bus serving Carshalton and Wallington - the N213 - was withdrawn in 2009 after Transport for London (TfL) concluded that it attracted few users. Since then residents have regularly contacted their local MP Tom Brake requesting later journeys between Croydon and Sutton. Since the loss of the N213, Tom has led a campaign to reintroduce a night bus service between the two boroughs.
Tom said that "the lack of night time transport services in Carshalton and Wallington particular affects those working in or participating in the night time economy." He added "without a night bus, the safety of night-time travellers is compromised as they are forced to walk in the middle of the night or use illegal minicabs. Extending the 154 service into a 24 hour route would have a beneficial impact upon the safety of night clubbers and shift workers alike."
