ALW Awards Ceremony

Colleges from the Learning and Skills Council South London Region held an Awards Ceremony on Thursday 20 May to celebrate achievement in learning and skills during Adult Learners Week. The 6 London Boroughs involved were Bromley, Croydon, Kingston-upon-Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames and Sutton. There were 18 colleges represented including 2 sixth form colleges, 3 specialist colleges for those with special needs or disadvantaged women,7 General FE colleges and 5 LEA Adult Colleges. The colleges came together to promote the public sector contribution to the learning and skills agenda forming a consortium entitled the Committee of South London Principals (COSLP).

COSLP represents the entire interests of the publicly funded College sector in South London and is responsible for over 90% of the London South Learning and Skills Budget in 2002/03.

The Awards Ceremony took place in the House of Commons between 16.00 and 17.30 on 20 May. Keynote speakers included the host, John Horam MP for Orpington, Christina Conroy OBE, Chair of COSLP, Jay Mercer, Executive Director of the London South Region of the Learning and Skills Council and Jacqui Henderson, Regional Director for the Learning and Skills Council in London. Awards were presented by Jacqui Henderson. Principals, senior staff of the member colleges and MP's from the represented regions were also in attendance. Learners from each of the represented Colleges were presented with an award. Richmond Adult Community College and Richmond upon Thames College were amongst the colleges represented. The Awards ceremony was timed to coincide with Adult Learners Week which runs from 17 to 21 May and is a nationwide event run by the National Institute of Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE).
