Fight To Save Local Post Offices Rages On

2.24.22pm GMT Wed 17th Nov 2004

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has condemned the recent decision by Post Office Ltd to close another five post office branches in Sutton. Citing the groundswell of local support for the Liberal Democrat's campaign to save local post offices, Mr Brake has tabled a parliamentary motion protesting against the closures and he is seeking a Parliamentary debate to hold DTI Ministers to account for the closure of nine post offices in total in Sutton in recent months.

Mr Brake said,

"Despite the strong public resistance to post office closure, Sutton has lost nine post offices in recent months. The closure program has not been transparent or sensitive to the pleas of local residents. Post Offices are the backbone of our local community and I will continue to hold the Post Office and the Government to account for the closures. I am seeking the debate because the Government is the principal shareholder of the Post Office. The Government and the Post Office must not ignore the concerns of the public it is meant to serve."
