Lib Dems help Sport Relief go the extra mile

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake, along with sports personalities and other parliamentarians, laced up his running shoes to take part in the Westminster Mile run on Wednesday 16 June.

Of the 130 parliamentarians who took part, the Labour whip Jim Murphy placed first in the contest, while Paul Marsden and Tom Brake placed second and third respectively.

The Westminster mile is part of a series of mile-themed events organised by Sport Relief to challenge the nation to 'go the extra mile' to help changes the lives of people in the UK and abroad. It also helps to mark the 50th anniversary of Roger Bannister's epic sub four-minute mile and coincides with a stunning summer of sport (including Euro 2004 and the Olympics).

Mr Brake said,

"This was a rare opportunity for me to combine my love of running with raising money to help tackle poverty in the UK and abroad. I hope this race inspires other sport enthusiasts to take part in the main event, the Fitness First Sport Relief Mile on 10 July."
