Simon Hughes takes his mayoral campaign to Carshalton and Wallington12.00.00am GMT Thu 8th Jan 2004 Local commuters travelling by train on the first two working days of the new year (Monday 5 January and Tuesday 6 January) were greeted by Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate Simon Hughes and local MP Tom Brake, who were on hand to help hand out over 1500 Rail User Surveys. Commuters travelling from Carshalton, Carshalton Beeches, Hackbridge and Wallington stations have been given surveys seeking their views on the quality of train services in south London. Simon Hughes commented, "I am seeking the views of local commuters and I intend to listen to them. They should not have to suffer another four years of a Mayor who neglects the needs of the outer London boroughs. Residents of this green borough were really positive about our vision for a safe and green transport system that has been thoroughly costed." Tom Brake added, "The response from commuters we met was fantastic! I urge all commuters to return the survey to the FREEPOST address. At the moment, overground train services to outer London are unreliable, unaffordable, and unable to meet the needs of the 21st century commuter. The Liberal Democrats have put together a package of transport proposals that would deliver us from the cattle truck conditions that have become the norm." The survey was part of a London-wide effort to elicit feedback from rail users. The responses are due to be analysed by the end of the month and Mr Brake will lead a delegation to discuss the results of the survey with South Central Trains management shortly thereafter.
