Lib Dems steal the show at "Sustainable Transport Awards Ceremony"

1.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 25th Jul 2005

Tom Brake, MP for Wallington and Carshalton, was overjoyed to hear the news that Liberal Democrat run boroughs won five, out of a possible total of ten, awards at this year's "Sustainable Transport Awards" ceremony, with Sutton Council taking home two awards!

Sutton Council won the award for "Best Council Travel Plan."

Tom Brake MP said,

"Sutton's awards are definitely well deserved, as the council have campaigned hard to convince council workers to stay out of their cars."

After beating off the stiff competition from 50 other schools from all over London Dorchester primary school, Sutton won the award for "Best School Travel Plan". Since Dorchester's school travel plan went into effect, they have seen an increase of 17% in the number of children who walk to school, which means that 73% of the entire school's pupils now walk to and from school!

Sutton was not the only Liberal Democrat council to win recognition for its efforts. Lambeth council won "Best Good Going Newsletter," Kingston upon Thames won "Best Good Going Borough," and Islington won "Sustainable Transport Borough of the Year." The Liberal Democrats really did steal the show at the Sustainable Transport Awards ceremony this year.

Sutton councillor Colin Hall said, "Winning these awards is an outstanding achievement and goes to show that Liberal Democrat councils across London really do take environmental sustainability very seriously."
