Record Number of MPs in Carshalton for Lib Dem Hustings and Curry Evening11.28.00pm GMT Sat 21st Jan 2006
Lib Dem leadership contenders Simon Hughes MP and Chris Huhne MP were joined by Vince Cable MP, as Menzies Campbell's MP stand-in, for a lively hustings in front of a hundred Lib Dem members and supporters at Wentworth Hall in Carshalton on Saturday night (21 January). The event was hosted by Cllr Lal Hussain and local MPs Tom Brake and Paul Burstow. Susan Kramer MP from Richmond Park also attended. After delivering excellent speeches, the three leadership hopefuls fielded questions from the audience on issues ranging from their attitudes to the environment, representation of women and ethnic minorities, disability rights and Iran. Neil Frater, Chairman of Sutton Borough Liberal Democrats, who compered the evening's proceedings said, "A great night was had by all. Everyone present got a real feel for the candidates' strengths." Local MPs Tom Brake and Paul Burstow have declared their support for Ming Campbell MP.
