TOM BRAKE MP BACKS LOCAL SCHOOLS IN SINGING TO RESOLVE CONFLICT

12.18.58pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 12th Jun 2006

Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, is urging local schools to participate in a historic project that aims to unite the UK's children in song.

The Joint project, Song for Peace, initiated by the teachers' union NASUWT, the charity Youth Music, and the organisation Peace One Day, encourages schools across the UK to sing a song for peace - No Wars Will Stop Us Singing - on the United Nations International Day of peace, 21 September 2006.

Mr. Brake said:

"This innovative project provides a great opportunity for everyone to focus on seeking to resolve conflict within the family, at school, in the community and across the world.

"Engaging schools in singing to mark the International Day of Peace will not only keep this important message alive throughout the year, but will send out a powerful point about young people working in harmony.

"Music is one of the most effective ways to engage children and young people on important issues. I am delighted to be involved in a campaign that uses music as a means to spread important messages surrounding young people uniting in the face of conflict and working together to achieve peace."
