Tom Brake To Open Playground
4.12.06pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 4th Jul 2006
On Sunday July 9th at 12noon, Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, will open the completely re-vamped Orchard Avenue Recreation Ground playground.
The playground had been threatened with closure due to vandalism and the ever-increasing costs of the replacement and repairs to the play equipment.
Mr. Brake worked with local resident Carolyn Morris, lead councillor for the environment, Colin Hall, ward councillors Paddy Kane and Margaret Court and the council's park's team to support the community's bid for new play facilities, including facilities for disabled children.
Caroline Morris's group helped to choose the new park design and to ensure facilities such as a special roundabout, a specially adapted swing, a big climbing frame and a slide, both of which are wide enough for carers to accompany children.
Commenting on this achievement, Mr Brake says, "This really shows that if people want something badly enough, by working together and getting organised they can achieve their dreams."
