The Phoenix Centre, which forms the hub of the urban regeneration project in Sutton, is in the running for the title of Project of the Year as part of the 2006 National Lottery Awards.

The Phoenix Centre has already beaten off stiff competition to reach the regional final along with three other projects from the South East. The four projects now go head to head in a public vote for the accolade of South East Project of the Year.

Local Beddington South campaigner Sally Brearley said:

"The Phoenix Centre is a great place. There is something for everyone. You can exercise your mind or your body, be by yourself or meet others. When I think back to how that area used to be, the Phoenix Centre is something new and alive. It has risen from the ashes of the past and surely that is what regeneration is all about."

Carshalton and Wallington MP, Tom Brake urged constituents to show their support for the Phoenix Centre by casting their vote before the polls close on 11 August 2006. Votes can be placed by following the link included at the foot of the page, or by telephone on 0845 434 9076.

Commenting on the success of the project, Tom said:

"This is a real triumph of community spirit and council initiative."

"The Phoenix Centre is the Council's flagship project and it is only right that it receives the recognition it deserves."

"The Centre is helping break down social barriers and encourages constituents to lead a healthier lifestyle. By providing gym facilities, as well as workshops and classes including Salsa and belly-dancing, the Phoenix Centre has transformed the Roundshaw Estate and breathed new life into the community."
