Tom Brake Supports NEA Warm Homes Campaign 2006

3.52.53pm GMT Wed 29th Nov 2006

Tom Brake has pledged his support to the NEA 2006 Warm Homes Campaign. The campaign has been organised by the national energy charity NEA and is supported by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The campaign's goal is to increase awareness of the approximately 3 million households in England that are currently facing fuel poverty.

In the winter of 2005-2006, in Carshalton and Wallington there were around 45 extra deaths caused by cold weather and fuel poverty. Or a total of 24,000 excess winter deaths in England as a whole. The majority of these deaths occurred in the pensioner population.

Mr Brake commented "It is inexcusable in the 21st century that so many households in England can still not afford to heat their homes. Any campaign which seeks to highlight this appalling fact deserves our full support."

Anyone who is worried about their winter fuel bill should call the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 336699 for information and advice on keeping warm in winter. Or for more information about grants available to keep your home warm, call freephone 0800 3166011 and quote MK 550.
